Feel free to follow along at home as we go though great driving albums, test them in the real world, and then review them here for all to see. Up first is Muse's new album, The 2nd Law .
First off, this album isn't 100% crazy exhaust-fumed guitar solos and brash drum crashes, and it shouldn't be. A great driving album, and even just a great album for that matter, should have its ups and downs; it should bring you to a high and then gracefully float you down to a solace.
Driving for the length of an album, you're not going to want to be flat out for 40+ minutes. I usually take the opportunities when I get the chance, but then settle down, relax, and just cruse with the music.
The 2nd Law does this perfectly.
On the other hand, Muse's latest album does itch your foot quite a bit. The opening track, Supremacy , begins with a drum and guitar riff that will blow your carbon fiber roof off.
Madness synchs your right hand into a rhythm with the gear leaver.
And finally we come to The 2nd Law: Unsustainable .
Pop this track on and hop on a busy motorway/interstate. You're guaranteed to drive like a jackass for the next three minutes and 48 seconds. The track opens with a blood-pumping string sections that asks for it when pulling out of an EZ/I-Pass toll booth.
Then the bass drops, not really what I was expecting from Muse, but it works.

Haven't listened to it in the car yet, been listening to Metallica mostly since I picked it up, but gave it an 8 because I love the album anyway. Now I have madness stuck in my head...
